So many people have said they just don’t get the magic ring. They make it sound like it’s some dreadful form of torture. But it really isn’t. It’s just that so many tutorials have these weirds steps that even I don’t get. Why make it difficult when it can be done with an easy, simple, no-fail method??!! So I made you this tutorial. Not only with a clear video but also with a step by step picture tutorial. With this you’ll be able to make the magic ring in no time!
**While you can make half double crochet and double crochet and other stitches in your magic ring, I made this tutorial with 6 single crochet in a magic ring to keep it easy for you. If you do not know yet how to make the single crochet, click here to go to a very good tutorial about the single crochet.
First up is my YouTube video tutorial about this very easy and simple magic ring. You can play it over and over and even slow down the playing speed to really get a good understanding of how the magic ring is made. The magic part about this one is that it’s super easy!
This is the simple method I teach my students in crochet class in elementary school. They all say it’s such an easy method that allows them to learn it within minutes!

Next up is my step by step pictures tutorial. As you’ll see I’ve added some text under the pictures. This way you will really understand how it’s done.

Picture 1: hold the yarn end in your left hand and the part of the yarn attached to your ball of yarn, in your right hand
Picture 2: bring the yarn in the right hand to the end in your left hand
Picture 3: hold the ring with your left hand like that

Picture 4: pull the yarn in your right hand away from the ring so the ring becomes smaller
Picture 5: insert your hook with the head of your hook facing down and grab the yarn behind the ring
Picture 6: pull the yarn through the ring

Picture 7: place the middle finger of your right hand on the loop that’s on the hook. This is to make sure it doesn’t fall off the hook
Picture 8: grab that yarn
Picture 9: pull through the loop on your hook (this does NOT count as your first stitch)

Picture 10: should look like this now
Picture 11: start making the first single crochet (if that’s what you need to make in your magic ring according to the pattern you are using) by inserting the hook into the ring again (with the head of your hook facing down) and pull that yarn through the ring
Picture 12: continuation of the first single crochet

Picture 13: still making that first single crochet here (=pull the yarn through those 2 loops on the hook)
Picture 14: you’re first single crochet in a magic ring is done!
Picture 15: make single crochet stitch number 2 the same way as the first

Picture 16: make single crochet stitch number 3
Picture 17: make single crochet stitch number 4
Picture 18: make single crochet stitch number 5

Picture 19: make single crochet stitch number 6 and then with your left hand pull the short yarn end away from the ring
Picture 20: your magic ring is done!
Picture 21: insert your hook in the very first single crochet your made and start row 2 according to your pattern
That’s it! Now you know how to make a simple magic ring!
