My crochet lessons diary week 14

Lesson 14, March 8th, 2023

This week we got to crochet again!!! It’s been a while since we had been busy with learning to sew felt shapes. But this week we got to crochet again and it went surprisingly well. I had been worried because it’s been over a month. Was worried the girls wouldn’t remember how to crochet.

They could still crochet!

As I just said, I was worried the girls would have forgotten who to crochet because it’s been a while. But they practiced at home and still knew how to make a single crochet. One had even finished her little coin purse at home. Next lesson she’ll be able to start making an octopus.

Told them to keep practicing at home with videos from my YouTube channel. But of course they have to study for exams first. Exams are starting and that is soooooo much more important than crochet.

Eye problems

There’s this one girls who had always been able to crochet nicely. From the very beginning at always looked as it should. But this week it didn’t look good. Was all messy and full of holes and skipped stitches. At first I thought perhaps it’s because it’s been a while and she needs to catch up a little. But then I saw her squinting her eyes. That is something she didn’t used to do. Then I realized this time she was also using thinner yarn. That’s when it hit me…she might have undiagnosed eye sight problems. So I had her read the poster behind her. It was on the other side of the classroom but I could easily read the smaller text. The other girls too. Only those with glasses couldn’t read that text. And this girl couldn’t either. She could not even properly read the bigger text. No wonder she was struggling to crochet with this thin yarn. She can’t see what she’s doing. Told her to tell her mother it might be time for her to get her eyes checked. This girl needs glasses.

Luckily kids with glasses don’t get laughed at here so she’ll be just fine if she needs glasses.

Each time 1 less skipped stitch

There’s 2 girls that crochet very nice looking single crochet stitches but they often skip stitches. Every time they came to me they had skipped stitches. But each time less than the last time. All other girls cheered them on as if it was a sporting event 😂 Only 7 skipped stitches = 🥳🥳🥳. Then a few minutes later only 3 skipped stitches = 🥳🥳🥳 Then a few minutes later only 1 skipped stitches = 🥳🥳🥳 Because they were cheered on like this, it made the struggle fun. Each time there were less skipped stitches, the cheering got louder. By the time it was time to go home, they had no skipped stitches anymore. And we had a headmistress coming to see why there was so much noise and cheering going on in this classroom 😂😂😂😂 Hey, learning should be fun 😁

New yarn

As soon as exams are over I will go get new yarn for the girls. Different yarn. Bit thicker. Thought that might be better since so many of the girls are wearing glasses. And they are staring at books all day. That can’t be good for their eyes.

Since they already got new crochet hooks thanx to a lovely reader of my blog who donated to buy new hooks, I only need to get one thing for them = that yarn. Thinking of choosing very colorful yarn. Have noticed the girls looooooove bright colors. Since this yarn is thicker, it will show the holes more and that then makes it easier to see where the hook needs to be inserted. And it’s not as bad for their eyes.

That’s it for this week. I want to write a bit more but I have a cold and am not feeling very well. Plus all my kids have exams. It’s exhausting to make sure they all study properly + work on my new pattern. All that will a little sick. I’m sure many of my readers can relate to this rather busy exam week schedule 😬😬
