Lesson 13, February 15th, 2023
Hot weather + the girls just finished practicing for the exhibition next week + some forgot their stuff = only 9 girls in attendance. But it was fun as always. They’re learning the blanket stitch way faster than expected.
That oh so hot weather…
It was one of those days…hot, just really hot. Nothing but sweating the whole time. Even with 3 big fans blowing our direction. But we didn’t complain though. For the past 2 weeks we’ve been getting extremely bad rain every single night. In many areas there is flooding. Some kids even have to walk through floodwater to get to school. But with this hot weather the water level will go down and so no complaining about all that sweating.
It does make it a bit harder to work with felt. Felt sticks to your hands when sweating. That was a bit annoying though.
Girl did not do that on her own 🤨😄
There’s this little second grade girl. She came to me with her felt heart that she had made. It was absolutely perfect. She definitely didn’t make on her own because her own stitching is a little messy (and that’s an understatement). She proudly told me her mother had done this for her. I would like to meet her mother some day. I hear she crochets really well and can sew and do all these kind of things. Just like me. It would be nice to form a crochet group to meet once a week or once every 2 weeks. I might just start a crochet course on this small island here. When I was talking to the girl about what her mother could do, the other girls said their mothers so badly wanted to learn all the things the girls learn in school. There are no crochet courses here so that would not be the worst idea.

She likes sewing little felt hearts but so badly wanted to crochet
One of the girls looked like she wanted to ask me something but was too shy to do so. I could see it on her face she badly wanted to ask so I asked what was on her mind. She answered with this very very quiet voice. For those who don’t know, I have some hearing problems. But when you listen to this girl, everyone will think they have a hearing problem. She speaks so quietly…. had to ask her to speak a whole lot louder because I could not understand a word of it.
Turns out she liked sewing hearts but preferred crocheting and was wondering if she could learn the magic ring to start making this octopus:

So I showed her how to make this octopus and gave her the pattern. She quickly got to row 5. Told her to take the pattern home and continue there. If she has questions about it, she can ask me when we meet in school.
This girl crochets very neatly and so I’m sure that octopus is gonna be cute one!
Blanket stitch is going pretty well
All but one of the girls can sew a nice and neat looking blanket stitch already. The only one who’s not doing that great yet is the girl from second grade. But that’s understandable. She’s still very young.
I noticed that when they learn to sew this stitch, putting it on the table to see where the needle needs to go, is easier than trying to sew while holding the item.
I do have to get them better needles. The ones we were using aren’t that good anymore. Not sharp enough. So I’ll have to get some better needles.
Not for next week day. Next Wednesday is Ash Wednesday and then the school is closed = no crochet & crafts lessons. The week after we will focus on crochet again. So I still have some time to go get some needles.
Anyway, that’s it for this week. If you want to have a look at how I sew felt hearts, you can see it in my YouTube video here:
Cute little heart with googly eyes. Planning on making a tutorial for my blog here but I haven’t had the time yet. Been very busy crocheting my Isabella The Easter Bunny.
See you next time 🙋♀️❤
