A lot of fancy crochet stitches are made with the double crochet stitch. One good example would be the scallop stitch. That’s with double crochet stitches most of the time.

One thing I would say about the double crochet is that you shouldn’t pull the yarn too much. It would create stiff and hard stitches. Nobody wants that of course.
